YNPNsfba Celebrates 16 Years of Empowering the Bay Area's Nonprofit Professionals

On November 14, the Cartoon Art Museum set the stage for a fun and lively evening celebrating YNPNsfba’s 16th Anniversary and the Young Nonprofit Leaders of the Year.

Sofia NavarroPast YNPNsfba Career Development member '10-'11, Carla Mays, emceed the event providing those in attendance with a brief history of YNPNsfba’s earliest days. Guests learned how YNPN began as the idea of nonprofit colleagues who met regularly after work and has now grown to 41 chapters across the United States

A portion of the evening was dedicated to recognizing three of the Bay Area’s young nonprofit visionary leaders. Amidst a record number of candidates submitted for honors this year the following stood out and were named this year’s Young Nonprofit Professional, Board Member, and Executive Director of the Year.

Sofia Navarro, YNP of the Year 2013 Young Nonprofit Professional of the Year was awarded to Sofia Navarro, Chief Operating Officer at The Unity Council. Prior to her current role as COO, Navarro served as Vice President of Programs. It was in this role that she oversaw five programs that served over 6,000 people annually - helping these individuals find better jobs, build financial assets, and access educational opportunities.

Young Nonprofit Board Member of the Year was awarded to Denise Heitzenroder of the New Leaders Council. Heitzenroder was nominated for her tireless commitment to creating a better Bay Area community through active involvement with a number of local nonprofits. Heitzenroder was praised for her ability to build bridges between organizations to increase impact.

2013 Young Nonprofit Executive Director of Year
was awarded to Kaushik Roy of The Shanti Project. Roy, who quickly rose to Executive Director in an impressive four short years, led his organization out of debt in the midst of the economic downturn. He is known for serving as an inspiration to staff, donors, and volunteers; reaching out to like-minded nonprofits; and advocating on behalf of his organization’s cause before government officials.

As part of his prized recognition, Roy also received a complimentary consultation with YNPN board member Dale Wannen, President of Sustainvest Asset Management, an independent investment advisory firm that specializes in socially and environmentally responsible investing.

The party continued with guests reconnecting with old friends and forging new relationships – some guests even picked up some great prizes. Prizes included two 1-year YNPNsfba memberships that guarantee access to the coming year’s roster of professional development events. Other prizes included a ticket to either the next Nonprofit Bootcamp or Social Media for Nonprofits Conference, a copy of Darian Rodriguez Heyman’s Nonprofit Management 101, 1-year gym membership to Crunch, and $50 gift certificate to Tacolicious.

Spirits remained high as the party continued past its scheduled end time with a promise of another great year ahead for YNPNsfba in 2014.
